Project Background

Salt Spring Island is located a quick 30 min seaplane flight from Vancouver.  It offers a unique blend of residents, tourists and vacation homes.  Salt Spring Kitchen Co. is a maker of fresh Jam on the island utilizing the produce available locally and made locally.  The company has expanded and looked to create their new home for manufacturing and sales on the island.

 

Project Narrative & Design

Grounding the project in the of west coast Salt Spring Island materials the project consists of 3 buildings inclusive of 2 industrial warehouse renovations to create a cohesive compound for Salt Spring Kitchen Co.  The larger building design focuses on programmatic repurposing to a kitchen, recladding and the addition of additional warehouse space that could be multifunctional (art gallery, music/wedding venue).  The smaller building focuses on commercial CRU spaces related to local food.  Each of these different portions of the project are designed in a way to ‘not be your typical or elevated warehouse/ factory’, leaning into the island design aesthetic.  Incorporated into the reskinning is a series of illuminated metal panels which have a dual function of building façade as well as function as public art showcasing pixilated photos of Salt Spring.
