'Reflective Rings'
Standing 6.5 feet tall, this metal sculpture captures Coquitlam’s layered history, drawing together the legacy of the logging industry and the vast forests that once defined the region. Formed as a stylized tree trunk, each concentric growth ring marks the quiet passage of time, echoing decades of ecological change and human settlement. The rings are not merely carved lines, but a physical record of endurance, resilience, and transformation.
Fabricated in brushed and reflective stainless steel, the surface shifts with the day. The brushed grain softens the light, giving the form a silvery warmth, while polished bands catch the sun and mirror their surroundings. Clouds drift across its surface. Trees ripple in reflection. Passersby see themselves layered within the rings, momentarily becoming part of the timeline. Light and shadow move across the metal like seasons, animating the sculpture so it feels both solid and alive.
As viewers trace the circular patterns, they encounter not only Coquitlam’s past but their own presence within it, a merging of memory and immediacy. Though the original forests towered far higher than this form, “Reflective Rings” distills their magnitude into an intimate, contemplative gesture. It stands as a reminder of the grandeur that shaped the city and the enduring bond between people, place, and the natural world that continues to surround them.
